Amazon Impostor
I Googled Amazon information on how to cancel a subscription to Amazon Prime and called a phone number listed as Amazon customer service. The agent, Mr. Martin, seemed legitimately helpful initially, and was sending me codes to reset my forgotten password. The name of the company, Amazon, was attached to it. Then he said he needed to know when I was last charged and had me look it up on my bank app. He then led me through a series of prompts, assuring me it was to ensure I would no longer be charged for Amazon Prime on Auto-Pay. The next thing I know, we're in Zelle and he's trying to talk me into hitting 'Send' on what he's referring to as a code but on my screen it says I would be sending $598.00 to (117) 613-1273 or another phone number. He insists it's policy and he's worked for Amazon for 7 years, he's on a recorded line and he doesn't want to lose his job. My gut tells me otherwise, as does my screen. I hear many people chatting in the background so I ask to speak to his supervisor to verify this. He reluctantly agrees then puts a man named Sam Johnson on the phone with an identical Pakistanian accent and voice. It's clearly the same individual, so I tell him he should be ashamed of himself for trying to rob people. He said "What? Rob who?" In a subdued voice. I quickly backed out of everything and hung up, checking my account several times afterwards. I also figured out how to cancel Amazon Prime on my own through the app on my phone. I think this John Martin, if that was his name, may have actually worked for Amazon, though I can't be sure. It may've just been a false number posing as Amazon.
