Received a call to our business informing our receptionist that our electricity would be turned off in 40 minutes if we did not make a payment on our account. She informed our accounts payable department that then called them back to get the specifics since we had in fact made our payment. We were informed that they electronically sent our payment to our bank which in turn sent an additional $60,000 which they had to refund and therefore no payment had been made. They got everyone in panic mode stating our account was flagged for fraud and we needed to go to a local SCE office or payment center and make an immediate payment that they could not take payment via credit card over the phone. They stated the payment would have to be made via cash or cashiers check. We preceded to go to payment location they supplied which was a CVS. They then called to inform the person making the payment that they were able to get the dispatch to cancel the shut off but must have payment posted within next 30 minutes for a minimum of $1000.00. The person sent to make the payment was confused and they kept her in panic mode then informed her no she got it wrong she needed to make the payment over the phone with a prepaid card. The person doing this had the gut feeling that this was a scam but knew if she made the mistake and didn't do as stated we could lose power for 48 hours as stated previously. Few factors that contributed to the scam: Too many people involved, the person how ultimately took the call from the AP clerk although asked if we initiated the call to SCE or if it came to us was informed no I called SCE directly but being in panic mode when asked the 800 number on the statement the answer was a yes when the next day they confirmed no they actually called the number given to them by the receptionist.
