Apartment Rental - Craigslist Ad Scam
I initially saw a Craigslist ad listing a home for rent for $970. This same home was also on Zillow for sale. When I reached out to the poster of the Craigslist ad, the "homeowner", who referred to himself as David Werzberger, told me a story about how him and his wife bought the home, fixed it up to sell it but did not want to sell it for as high as the realtor wanted to sell it for, and he was currently living out of state. He wanted to rent it to a couple who would take care of the house for him until he was back in town in a year or two and was able to put it back on the market. His backstory was that him and his wife work with organizations such as warriorsascent.org to help people with PTSD and mental illness. They sold themselves as genuinely good people. I respond and answer his rental questionnare that asked for my occupational info, address, phone numbers, referrals and a bunch of other personal info (no ssn or bank info though). A day later, he responds that his family and him have chosen my boyfriend and I to be the renters of him home. he gives me permission to go look at the home from the outside and through the windows as he did not have a key around for us to see the inside. We go and do that and said we are happy with the outside but want to see the inside before we do anything else. The man emails me a lease with me and my boyfriend's name on it. We are also texting and he is texting from a local phone number. I told him again that I am not signing anything until we see the inside. He tells me he will mail me the keys and a physical copy of the lease but I have to send him $100 for the shipment for insurance and cost. He's also rushing me when I'm at work and trying to get me to send the money immediately. I send the $100 so he can get to Fedex to ship it and then he texts me again that he needs another $100 because things are more expensive during COVID to send things. I sent the other $100 because he said he would take it off our security deposit. Finally when I'm asking for tracking info he tells me his attorney said not to send the package to me without receiving the entire $700 security deposit. I repeat over and over that I will not send it without seeing the interior of the home. At this point I ask him to send the $200 back (all via CashApp) saying that if wasn't a scammer than he would send it back and give me time to think about everything. He says he needs ten days before he can give me money back. I texted him multiple times to try to get the money back, even requesting it back on the app and he declined it and then blocked me. So now I'm out the $200 and trying to warn people of these scams.
