Employment - Equipment Purchasing Scam
Joe Tartabini (LinkedIn profile: https://www.linkedin.com/in/joe-tartabini-32aa591b2/) messaged me on LinkedIn a few weeks ago about various jobs available at his company, AT INTERNET SOLUTIONS (short for Applied Technology Solutons Inc.). After some discussion, he referred me to another HR member, Helene, to interview with off of LinkedIn. Helene Le Pape (LinkedIn URL: https://www.linkedin.com/in/helenelepape/) contacted me via Skype messenger, claiming she was the HR Director for AT INTERNET. She never called or used video calls, but only skype messaging. Upon each time of contact with her, Joe would also message me and tell me that I needed to be on Skype to talk with Helene at that exact time, or even after I was already chatting with her so they are clearly working together. After a very unusual interview process and described onboarding, she gave me an offer for a remote Project Manager job and I accepted. I did research on the company, read the Wikipedia pages about it, and found the HR Director's bio and headshot on the AT INTERNET website which matched the one on her Skype profile. Everything looked real. I asked many questions and they responded with complete sentences so it did not appear to be like many phishing scams where bad grammar is present and no other information can be found online. One of the first major red flags was when I dialed the phone number for their corporate New York office and the phone rang for an unusually long time, ultimately leading to a generic voicemail, "the person you're calling is not available" then an abrupt beep to leave a message. How does a corporate company not have a phone menu and or detailed voicemail message? The next red flag was that Helene required me to pay for my background check. I was instructed to buy a visa gift card and then send the card information to her Secretary. Helene appeared to be operating from one of the French offices but her secretary was located in the New York office. That didn't make sense but alas, I continued. I deducted that this was safer than disclosing any personal financial information at the time, and complied. Next, I filled out tax paperwork, I-9, and W-4 forms, disclosing personal information and but was never asked for direct deposit information for future payment. Shortly after this, I was asked for my credit card institution login; username and password, so the company could give me "a payment for company equipment." I argued with Helene about my refusal to disclose my credentials and demanded she contacts me via phone call on my cell phone immediately. She claimed her secretary would reach out. I never got a call. No one has followed up since. It was at that moment that I realized it was a scam. I am taking necessary precautions now to protect myself and my information but also making numerous reports on their fraud. I have saved the entirety of my conversations with both Joe and Helene for future evidence if needed. Please investigate their profiles and AT INTERNET SOLUTIONS before someone else falls victim to their scam. The company may be real and these people are posing as the HR team or the whole thing could be fake. It is unclear.
