I used etax to prepare and file my taxes. It doesn't say at any point that there is a charge for this. When I received my refund it was short $124.80. When I went back to my tax forms I noticed that my routing number and account number had been changed to unk numbers. I called etax and they told me that the efile was free but that there were charges for the preparation of my taxes. The rep stated that these were listed on the front page of their website but I cannot find any charges described at all, in fact nothing related to costs. I told them I felt this was fraudulent and they told me that I had no right to expect free preparation. I told them I would be calling the irs and I have filled out a preparer complaint with them.

I did a web search for IRS tax preparation - and this ETax web site came up. I had assumed that it was a legitimate site recommendation through them so I used it to do my son's taxes. IT was very quick to do them, and going through to the end to efile - it said it was going to be free. However, it asked for a credit card to put on file (as well as bank info to send the refund to) which made me a little suspicious, but I have seen other sites do this too. After finishing up, I was trying to locate the 1040 in order to print it out, but couldn't find any thing. The only email I got was the confirmation to say an account was successfully set up. I went onto the bank site and found that they had charged $29.95 - and after reading over 50 complaints about a similar issue, plus they withheld up to $125 more from refunds - it makes me extraordinarily suspicious and nervous that this will also happen to my son. I will update if this changes.
