Government Agency Imposter
I received a call on my personal cell phone on Dec 8, 2021. While I live in NY, my cell phone is a Virginia number so the number they called from was a Va 434 area code number which made me pick up since I was in VA at the time and expecting some calls. I mention this because prior to this particular call, I have received several threatening messages from people claiming to be Customs agents indicating that they were trying to reach me due to a serious matter concerning my possible arrest. But I figured they were scams so I never answered. So they start with many Robocalls. Anyway, The caller was posing as a US Customs and Border patrol agent, stating his name was Ray Robles and provided a badge ID-CP87026 calling to notify me that they had a warrant for my arrest as they intercepted a package containing illegal drugs, $94000 and 9 drivers lic from different states in my name. They also said they have found that I have two properties in Texas with specific addresses provided (**** Claremont Ave El Paso Tx and **** Walnut Court Fort Worth Tx), and that I had multiple checking accounts with $250.000 in them. They indicated that the DEA has an arrest warrant out for me; stating warrant number AW-127315. "Ray" then transferred the call to his "senior officer" Troy Miller who identified himself as the Acting Commissioner for US Customs and Border Protection and provided his Badge ID A757848. So they played bad cop, good cop with the Miller person claiming that he wanted to help me avoid arrest. They had way too much information about me though, name, address, previous banks that I have used, and obviously my phone number. He also used the actual names of my immediate neighbors, indicating that they could be involved in "this matter". Miller told me I might avoid arrest and having my Soc Sec number blocked and current bank accounts seized if I cooperated with them so he asked that I text my drivers Lic to him (I did not) and then suggested that I should wire them money from my current accounts so I could help support the costs of agents on the ground. He even suggested that I might be able to avoid arrest by the DEA if I allowed them to come to my home to speak to me. He was willing to also contact our local police to have them accompany the DEA agents if I was more comfortable with that. Both people had Indian/Pakistani accents so their names did not exactly make sense given their accents. But more concerning was the amount of information they knew about me from the get-go. I eventually called him out on the scam and notified other agencies of this scam on their websites immediately after hanging up. I have also renewed my Lifelock account.
