Zillow.com / renter imposter
On Oct 13th I saw an ad for a rental in Zillow.com at address 389 227th Lane NE, Sammamish WA 98074 and reached out via Zillow.com. On Oct 18th I got a response to my phone from a person posing as the owner (Sung Wook Kim). The person asked me to send a email to [email protected] for more information. I responded via email and got a response with photos of the house and rent details. Since the email mentioned that the house is not available to view I did not take it seriously. We did check the Parcel Viewer website to match the owner name. We went to the property and viewed from outside. The house was locked and empty matching the pictures. We were convinced. On November 2nd I reached out again after exhausting all other rental availability. I was sent a rental application. On November 3rd I filled it out and sent it back with all my identity details like SSN, Address and Driver’s license# with a soft copy of my drivers license and my signature. On November 6th I was sent a link from stripe for identity verification link (https://verify.stripe.com/start/live_YWNjdF8xQUlnWDhDRnp1RGpBN3RWLF9PeFd1MFBHeU1namtWMzA5N2ZnQ2t1V1E4UDZ4NnhN01002GAyV6vx?locale=en-US) The web app asked me to take a picture of my drivers license front and back and a selfie. (Not sure how this is going to be used) On November 7th I was sent an email saying that my application was approved and I would sent the key as soon as I send the security deposit. I asked him if I can use his phone number to send via Zelle and he said I should use his partner’s account [email protected] registered to Nix Jason. I sent a dollar first to verify and when I initiated full payment ($2400) my back account got locked. I called the bank, they said whenever a small amount followed by a big amount is sent, the account is locked as a precaution against fraud and that if I try again in couple of days it should work.The person was behind me from friday to send the amount. I sent the $2400 on Friday Nov 10th 2023. They asked me to send a screenshot as a proof. I did that as well. It was radio silence after that. As the day progressed I started to realize that I have fallen for a scam. I checked online and out-of-state landlord is a known rental scam. Once I realized I have fallen victim I called the bank and raised a complaint. Signed up for credit bureau alert and put a “Fraud Alert”. On November 11th I got another message from them, I was told that there was some problem finalizing paperwork and I need to send them the first and last month rent to get the key. I kept leading them on and today (Nov 16th 2023) they asked me to send the money to a different account (305 776 7938) registered to Debra Quiroz. I got the details and told them the payment did not go through.
