Vehicle Repair Scam
A man named “Tom Merchon” is driving around parking lots soliciting people for fraudulent “auto repair services”. I was solicited by a man in a parking lot in a vehicle with “Go Go’s Auto” logo on the side. The man introduced himself as “Mr. Merchon” along with his son, and asked to “take a look” at the dent in my fender. I pulled into the parking lot, and he proceeds to tell me he owns an auto repair business and could fix it in 5-10 minutes. He said he could repair it for $160 and would give me his business card. I accept the business card, thinking I could potentially go to his garage and receive the repair later. He asks to “show me how he pops out the dent”. I oblige, and he attempts to use a suction cup to pull out the dent. This does not work, and he then pulls out hammers and crowbars and starts pounding on the fender. Much to my horror, he begins slathering bondo onto my fender with a credit card and then proceeds to use black spray paint on my car. He then demanded $160 and $20 tip for both him and his son. He demanded payment via cash app or cash from a local ATM. I only had PayPal, which he accepted. He placed multiple phone calls to his wife and “associate” to ensure payment went through as the account wasn’t actually his. The payment was sent to someone named “Sunny Merchon”. I was afraid to refuse payment, as I had a broken ankle and had no way to escape. There were 2 men with crowbars demanding money from me, and I was afraid if I refused they might hurt me or carjack me. The “repair job” was an absolute disaster and looks terrible. He essentially vandalized my vehicle. The repair was in no way professional or legitimate and I was tricked and coerced into paying. Later online searches revealed other have been solicited in a similar manner and scammed.
