Imposter Rental Scam
We were inquiring about condo rentals in The Naples area for next winter. After several emails back and forth between us and Mr. ******* ****** at Berkshire Hathaway, we chose the condo we wanted to rent. Mr ****** sent us a contract to look over and sign. The terms were 50% of the rental due at signing. We were given wire transfer instructions and completed the $4,250 wire transfer and mailed the signed contract to Mr ******’s office. Several days later we received an email confirmation that the transfer had been received by the condo owners and that the signed contract was received at the Realtor office. A scan of the contract was attached to the email. In this same email the Realtor, Mr ******, requested the remaining 50% payment. Since this was in violation of the contract, we questioned whether this was appropriate and called Mr. ******’s office at Berkshire Hathaway. Mr ****** denies having any communication with us other than sending us a list of available condos. So, we are out $4,250 and neither the realty office nor Mr ****** are taking any responsibility for our loss. The amount lost is not large enough for us to seek legal remedies but we have filed a police report and will do our best to make sure the word gets out about this scam.
